MTN launches commercial 5G in Congo-Brazzaville

The Republic of Congo has become the first country in the Central African sub-region to implement the fifth generation, commonly known as 5G, with the official launch on Thursday 21 November 2024 by the President of the Republic Denis SASSOU NGUESSO. This is an initiative by the mobile phone operator MTN Congo, which should enable the country to take advantage of this technology to accelerate its digital financial inclusion.

The fifth generation or 5G of the telecommunications company MTN was officially launched in Brazzaville on Thursday 21 November 2024 by the President of the Republic Denis SASSOU NGUESSO. The introduction of 5G by MTN Congo is a crucial step for the country’s digital development. Thanks to it, much faster and more stable connectivity with speeds of over 10 GB/s, opening the door to new opportunities for businesses and individuals, is now available. Sectors such as telemedicine, distance learning and smart city solutions could benefit greatly from this new technological infrastructure.

With 5G, the Congo is now entering a decisive new phase, ushering in an era of new economic growth that will nurture innovative start-ups and attract the world’s technology giants to our country. At the same time, the 5G revolution will create a wave of highly skilled jobs for specialists in artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things, transforming the job market in our country.

The Republic of Congo thus becomes the first country in the Central African sub-region to implement this technology. The Congolese authorities see 5G as a major lever for reducing the digital divide and improving Internet access for all citizens. By launching 5G in the Central African country, the MTN Group is continuing its long tradition of innovation.

Today, as you know, the President of the Republic wants digital inclusion in our country, so a mother in the village can connect, a relative who is far away can contact you, and we want to contribute to this vision. We are the first today to launch it in Central Africa, it’s a high-capacity network, we can do remote surgery today with 5G because the response time is very low, so today if I say a word here, it’s transcribed remotely.

Farial DIKOBAT, Project Manager at MTN

5G is just one step for the MTN Group, which is committed to stepping up its efforts to develop new technologies and solutions that contribute to progress in the Republic of Congo. With more than a hundred sites already connected in the cities of Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire, MTN Congo plans to gradually extend 5G coverage to other localities in the central African country.
