Senegal : 50 technicians trained to boost the energy sector

Senegal’s National Institute of Oil and Gas (INPG) is launching two professional licenses focusing on the mechanical and electrical maintenance of oil and gas installations. This initiative aims to train 50 specialized technicians, thereby strengthening the nation’s human capital and solidifying its energy sovereignty as it prepares for its oil and gas production phase. This public-private partnership creates a direct pathway to employment for young Senegalese individuals.

Senegal’s energy sector is set to benefit from a new cohort of highly skilled technicians, thanks to a new initiative by the Guédiawaye National Polytechnique Institut (GNPI). The institute has introduced professional degrees in mechanical and electrical maintenance for oil and gas installations. This program aims to train 50 specialized technicians – 25 in electrical and 25 in mechanical maintenance – to bolster the nation’s oil and gas production capabilities and enhance its energy independence.

This therefore requires us to mobilise our collective intelligence, expertise and ingenuity to prepare a generation of Senegalese technicians capable of designing, maintaining and optimising the most complex energy installations. These young people are the guardians of our platforms, the architects of our energy sovereignty and the ambassadors of Senegalese expertise. Senegal can aspire to become a regional hub of energy expertise, where young people can find not only employment but also a vocation.

Biram Soulèye Diop, Minister of Energy, Petroleum and Mines,Senegal

During the launch ceremony on 31 October 2025, the Minister of Energy, Petroleum and Mines highlighted that the training courses align with the President’s vision. This ambitious program, a collaborative effort between public institutions, national companies, and international industrial partners, offers more than just training. It serves as a vital pathway to sustainable employment, fostering the growth of local content, encouraging innovation, and maximizing the value of national resources.

The first phase is to train mechanical maintenance technicians and electrical engineering maintenance technicians, and the goal is to train Senegalese people who are capable of taking on challenges in a highly specialised sector that requires a great deal of intelligence and dedication. There will be a selection process, and I can assure you that only the best will be chosen.

Fall Mbaye, Director of the National Institute of Oil and GasSenegal

Launched on November 17, 2025, this initiative is described as a « bridge to employment » for Senegalese youth. Its goal is to foster an environment that promotes economic growth, empowers local talent, and strengthens the nation’s economic independence. Through this, Senegal aims to establish itself as a significant force in the oil and gas sector, both within Africa and globally.
