Somalia : over 10 000 tourists arrivals reported in 2024

On September 1, 2025, Somalia launched its Electronic Travel Authorization (eTAS), providing travelers with faster entry into the country compared to the previous visa-on-arrival system. Most foreign nationals entering for business, tourism, and short-term studies must now obtain an eTAS online before entering Somalia. This major step is seen as a boost to the tourism sector as the number of tourists visiting Somalia is growing, with over 10,000 arrivals reported in 2024, a 50% increase from the previous year.

For decades, Somalia was defined by conflict and insecurity. But that is beginning to change and tourism is now at the center of this transformation. To access this statement, The Immigration and Citizenship Agency of Somalia has officially launched its E-VISA/ETAS service, which has been effective since September 1, 2025. The new system allows foreigners to apply for visas electronically via the agency’s official portal, marking a historic milestone in Somalia’s adoption of modern digital immigration systems, hence a boost to the tourism sector. The old process was lengthy and complicated, but this new streamlined approach reflects the authorities’ ambition to revive tourism.

The tourism sector in Somalia has improved a lot. We’ve seen new destinations, a positive shift in perception, and overall growth in arrivals. In 2023, we registered about 23 foreign tourists. This year, that number has reached 90, close to our target of 100. With policy changes like the e-visa system, we expect even more growth next year.

We receive several tourists in our shop, and we always welcome them warmly. Many are interested in Somali ornaments, traditional jewelry, and gold necklaces and rings. They really love it.

A few years ago, Somalia was a difficult destination for foreign tourists due to security concerns. But today, with visitor numbers on the rise, investors are calling on authorities to establish clear policies and restore historic landmarks  such as the Mogadishu Lighthouse to strengthen the country’s tourism revival.
