On January 21, 2024, President Kaguta Museveni took the helm as the chair of the G77+China. The handover of the leadership position from the Republic of Cuba to Uganda took place during the 3rd South Summit of the G77+China Heads of State and government in Kampala. A significant role that will foster collaboration and progress among member nations and a platform for the countries of the South to advocate for their collective economic interests.
President Museveni officially assumed the chairmanship of the Group of 77 plus China (G77+China) from Cuba on January 21, 2024 during the 3rd South Summit of the G77+China Heads of State and government in Kampala. G77+ China Under Uganda’s chairmanship, will prioritize accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, address climate change and biodiversity loss, strengthen international tax cooperation, finance for development, combat illicit financial flows, and enhance digital cooperation.

Commenting on the unity within the G77+China president Museveni acknowledged its significant representation with 80% of the global population and 40% of global GDP. He emphasized the need to promote trade among the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) member countries, stating that it’s a crucial factor in creating affluence. He also highlighted the need for support without conditionalities within the bloc.

The Group of 77 (G77) at the United Nations (UN) is a coalition of 135 developing countries, designed to promote its members’ collective economic interests. The bloc’s new chairperson, described as promoter of peace and stability, president Museveni, urges members of the bloc to continue in the promotion of world peace, specifically the case of S.
