Ghana and Zambia signed a landmark visa waiver agreement on 5 February 2025. This major step aims to strengthen bilateral ties and facilitate mobility between the two African countries. The announcement was made in Lusaka during President John Dramani Mahama’s official visit to Zambia, where he was welcomed by President Hakainde Hichilema.
Ghana and Zambia have signed a historic visa waiver agreement, allowing citizens of both countries to travel freely between Accra and Lusaka without having to apply for a visa. The agreement, concluded during Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama’s recent state visit to Zambia, is part of a drive to strengthen bilateral ties and regional integration. Economically, the authorities believe that this measure will stimulate several key sectors: by facilitating the mobility of entrepreneurs, students and professionals, it should encourage bilateral trade, increase cross-border investment and boost tourism on both sides.
Happy that the U move on the issue of continental free trade, but we can not develop continental free trade in the vacuum and we develop those bilateral relations that will identify what we can exchange and create the conditions for us to make those exchanges, and so we think that even do we have the joint commission. WE must enhance the relationship to a new level.
JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA, President of the Republic of Ghana
Analysts note that this pact symbolises a strong desire to deepen cooperation between West Africa and Southern Africa. By facilitating free movement, Accra and Lusaka are demonstrating their commitment to the continent’s integration objectives, particularly those promoted by the African Union and the African Continental Free Trade Agreement.
Economic agenda you excellence, my brother is now more important than it must be pronounced and because the state that you own or if you like support are the aspects of our relationship and the spirit of a pan africanisme want something to the Guardian and zambian and africans when leaders minister like those who in this room are able to deliver u education for our people.
HAKAINDE HICHILEMA, President of the Republic – Zambia
Political leaders in both countries hope that this agreement will serve as a model for other African states wishing to reduce barriers to mobility, strengthen diplomatic relations and promote greater regional cooperation.
