Afreximbank to open its regional office in Tunis in 2026

On 25 November 2025, the Tunisian president welcomed the president of Afreximbank to Carthage, confirming the bank’s commitment to supporting vital projects in Tunisia in the areas of infrastructure, SMEs and intra-African trade, and to opening a regional office in the near future to facilitate access to finance.

On November 25 2025, Tunisian President Kaïs Saïed welcomed Afreximbank President Dr George Elombi to the Carthage Palace during his working visit to Tunis. This high-level meeting reaffirmed the strength of the strategic partnership between Tunisia and the pan-African bank, which has been involved in financing infrastructure projects for several years.

We have just had a fairly lengthy meeting with the Head of State on several economic issues. Some of the projects we discussed concerned the expansion of Tunis-Carthage Airport. Others concerned certain deep-water ports and the assistance that Afreximbank could provide to Tunisia in terms of financial support.

In recent years, Afreximbank has established itself as a key player in Tunisia, financing local businesses, supporting SMEs and backing projects in energy, logistics and infrastructure. During the audience with the President of Tunisia, Dr George Elombi presented Afreximbank’s commitment to financing projects by the Tunisian Chemical Group (GCT) and the Gafsa Phosphate Company (CPG), a public institution that manages the mining and export of phosphate. The President of Afreximbank also mentioned the 400-kilovolt electricity interconnection project between Libya, Algeria and Tunisia, for which 70 kilometres remain to be built within Tunisian territory. The African import-export bank plans to finance this section.

This is an integration project that is very important to us. It is the project to interconnect the transmission line between Libya, Algeria and Tunisia. Afreximbank would like to provide financial support for this, as we have the internal capacity, even in Tunisia, to carry out this project. We have therefore come to ask the Head of State to do everything in his power, together with the relevant ministry, to enable us to finance this transmission line so that the Algeria-Libya-Tunisia interconnection can be completed very quickly.

Tunisian Head of State Kaïs Saïed praised Afreximbank’s ability to mobilise competitive financing, support the state budget and stimulate intra-African trade, an essential lever for regional economic integration. The opening of Afreximbank’s regional office, scheduled for 2026, marks a new phase of integration and consolidates a strategic cooperation that is set to intensify.
