In Cameroon, the former Speaker of the National Assembly, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, passed away on 6 May 2026 at the age of 86. He died less than two months after being replaced as Speaker of the National Assembly by Théodore Datouo on 17 April 2026. A Member of Parliament for over fifty years and President of the National Assembly since 1992, Cavaye Yeguie Djibril left his mark on several generations of Cameroonians.

His death comes two months after he handed over the presidency of the lower house of Parliament. First elected as a Member of Parliament in 1970, this trained teacher served with remarkable consistency over the decades. Promoted to the Speaker’s Chair in 1992, he presided over the National Assembly for thirty-four years, becoming the guarantor of legislative continuity and a key figure in the consolidation of parliamentary democracy in Cameroon.

I have just learnt of the death of the former Speaker of the National Assembly of Cameroon, CAVAYE YEGUIE Djibril. JOSEPH DION NGUTE, Prime Minister

Beyond his legislative duties, Cavaye Yeguié Djibril was a man of consensus and deep-rooted commitment. An influential member of the Political Bureau of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (RDPC) and Lamido of Mada, he skillfully reconciled ancestral traditions with the demands of political modernity. According to MPs, his legacy will be marked by unwavering support for the institutions of the Republic and a constant struggle for the unity of the nation. He also served as head of the RDPC Central Committee’s permanent regional delegation for the Far North.

The Right Honourable Member presided over the National Assembly, which comprises many political factions, for some thirty years. It is by no means an easy task, given the conflicting views on both sides. Yet the Right Honourable Member steered these parliamentary debates in the chamber of the National Assembly with tact, great courtesy and considerable composure.

TABOULI CELESTIN , Member of Parliament

The passing of Cavaye Yeguié Djibril marks a new chapter in the evolution of Cameroon’s political landscape. His name will go down in the annals of Cameroonian parliamentary history.
