United Democratic Front (UDF) President Atupele Muluzi on May 14, 2026 condemned the incident in which former Malawian President Lazarus Chakwera was tear-gassed while attempting to honor Malawi’s founding father, Hastings Kamuzu Banda. In a statement published on his official Facebook page, Muluzi described the incident as deeply regrettable and urged peace-loving Malawians to condemn it. According to the UDF, Malawians and Africans have a duty to preserve the spirit of brotherhood, tolerance and unity.
