Zimbabwe : Senate Approves Extension of Presidential Term to Seven Years

The Zimbabwean Senate has passed a bill extending the presidential term from five to seven years, paving the way for Emmerson Mnangagwa to remain in office until 2030. The legislation was approved by 75 votes to 4. Backed by the ruling ZANU-PF party, the bill also received support from traditional leaders and some opposition senators. It further provides that the president will henceforth be elected by Parliament rather than by direct universal suffrage.
