Morocco and Zambia have elevated their diplomatic relations, signaling a new era of cooperation in Rabat. This significant development underscores a mutual desire to deepen partnerships in key strategic areas. It also reflects a broader trend of increasing rapprochement between the Kingdom of Morocco and various African nations, setting the stage for a more structured and ambitious bilateral relationship.
Morocco and Zambia are strengthening their cooperation amid a broader realignment of African alliances. In Rabat, on 7 May 2026, discussions between the two foreign ministers reaffirmed a shared commitment to elevating bilateral cooperation to a higher level. This momentum forms part of a common strategic vision aimed at making the Morocco–Zambia partnership a driver of development and integration across the continent.
“In our discussions, we expressed our satisfaction with the excellent state of relations between our two countries and reaffirmed our commitment to further strengthening these ties in line with the vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, and His Excellency President Hakainde Hichilema. We also agreed to hold the second session of the Joint Cooperation Commission in Lusaka.”

Trade between the two countries nevertheless remains unbalanced, with more than 26 million US dollars in Moroccan exports to Zambia in 2024, compared with around 550,000 US dollars in imports from Zambia, according to Trading Economics. The challenge now is to translate this cooperation into concrete and balanced projects. Six key sectors have been identified: energy and mining, sustainable development, education and scholarships, research and innovation, health, and social protection.
“Zambia currently holds the presidency of the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention for the year 2026. In this capacity, we carried out a universalisation outreach visit to Morocco in order to promote humanitarian disarmament and strengthen international norms against anti-personnel mines, while recognising Morocco’s exceptional commitment in this field, the results of which are clearly visible.”

On the political front, Zambia reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and its autonomy plan for the Sahara. Zambia also welcomed United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797, regarded as a major step forward in this matter. This position strengthens Moroccan diplomacy and reinforces African support for a lasting political solution under the auspices of the United Nations.
