In the context of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), the Republic of Congo and Togo have taken a new step toward free movement across the continent. Both countries have announced the removal of visa requirements for African nationals. In the Republic of the Congo, the visa exemption for African citizens was announced by the authorities on Africa Day, May 25, 2026. The measure, which will come into effect on January 1, 2027, is part of the government’s commitment to accelerating continental integration.
“I take this solemn opportunity to announce today that, starting from January 1, 2027, entry into the Republic of the Congo will no longer require a visa for all African people.”

In Togo, since May 18, 2026, African nationals have been able to enter the country without a visa for stays of up to 30 days. This measure aims to strengthen regional integration and mobility across the continent, as part of the implementation of the AfCFTA.
“I am convinced that through this decision, other countries will follow suit so that from now on, when going to Kenya, Ethiopia, South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, and anywhere else in Africa, as citizens of this continent, we will no longer need this formality.”

These decisions come at a time when free movement of people is considered a key driver of economic development and continental integration. They are aligned with the vision of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the African Union’s Agenda 2063.

Togo and the Republic of Congo thus join other African countries committed to removing visa requirements for citizens of the continent. This momentum strengthens the vision of an integrated Africa, focused on free movement and the building of a common market.
