Africa : Egypt supports Moroccan Plan for Sahara

Egypt reaffirmed, this Monday, April 6, 2026 in Cairo, its full support for the territorial integrity of Morocco and the sovereignty of its southern provinces, stressing that the Moroccan autonomy initiative constitutes the only realistic solution to end the dispute over the Sahara.

Egypt officially reiterated its firm support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over the Southern Provinces on April 6, 2026, in Cairo, during the first session of the Moroccan-Egyptian Coordination and Monitoring Commission. The meeting was co-chaired by the Moroccan Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, and the Egyptian Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouli. This declaration comes amidst strengthening relations between Rabat and Cairo, marked by a political convergence around the UN framework and international law concerning the Western Sahara issue.

« I thanked His Majesty, may God assist him, and His Excellency President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi for this meeting. This commission is very important. We have initiated several avenues for developing relations, particularly in the economic and trade sectors. » We also discussed very important issues aimed at achieving economic complementarity between our two countries.

In Cairo, Egypt also reaffirmed its support for UN Security Council Resolution 2797 and presented the Moroccan autonomy initiative as the only realistic solution to resolve the Western Sahara dispute, making it the basis for future negotiations. This position is consistent with the statements made by the foreign ministers of both countries, who praised the strength of bilateral relations and their commitment to strengthening political and diplomatic cooperation. Discussions extended beyond the strictly political sphere, with the signing of several cooperation agreements in industry, investment, transportation, culture, education, and youth, as well as conventions on administrative assistance in customs matters and the fight against double taxation and tax evasion. This approach reflects the shared desire to consolidate a strategic and multidimensional partnership between Egypt and Morocco.

“They are based on a significant and long-standing heritage. His Majesty, may God assist him, attaches great importance to them, and we must preserve this. As governments, we must work to establish more exchanges, whether in the field of trade, industry, or even in the cultural sphere in the future, God willing. And it was emphasized that this meeting was very important and very successful.”

By supporting the UN framework and the latest Security Council resolution, Egypt affirms its commitment to a consensual and lasting solution to the Western Sahara dispute, thus strengthening the historical and strategic relations between the two countries.
