Benin : USD 1.365 billion for local connectivity

Benin has embarked on a major overhaul of its infrastructure. Through strategic projects rolled out across the country, Benin is improving its connectivity and competitiveness. This initiative forms part of a sustained drive towards economic modernisation and sustainable development.

Amidst the rapid drive for infrastructure modernisation across West Africa, Benin is pursuing a major, multi-sector programme to transform its economy. This ambitious initiative is focused on enhancing connectivity and improving access by opening up previously isolated areas. A key component of this plan is the Dogbo–Lalo road project, which is specifically designed to boost mobility and strengthen exchanges between local communities.

A country cannot develop without infrastructure, and one of the reasons why Africa suffers greatly in the economic sphere, among others, is its lack of infrastructure. Seeing that Benin is committing to the development of this sector is a very good thing; it shows that it is looking to the future and is keen to create drivers of development.

This momentum is supported by significant international financing, notably from the Islamic Development Bank, which has mobilised 1.365 billion dollars for several member countries, including 306.89 million euros for the modernisation of the Godomey–Ouidah–Hillacondji corridor. These investments also support projects in health, water, and agriculture, thereby strengthening economic resilience.

Studies must be properly conducted and infrastructures must meet clearly identified and quantified needs. It is also necessary to assess the relevance of investments and ask whether it is truly justified to allocate so many billions to them or whether the funds could be better used elsewhere. Studies are therefore essential. Then, budgeting must be rigorous in order to guarantee the quality of infrastructure and avoid implementation problems.

Benin’s infrastructural development also extends to social and urban sectors, with the rehabilitation of hospitals, the restoration of Lake Nokoué and the Porto-Novo lagoon, as well as the implementation of a video surveillance system in several cities. These initiatives reflect a comprehensive modernisation strategy aimed at strengthening competitiveness, security, and the country’s economic growth.
