BUSINESS – ECOWAS REPORT : 4,400 jobs created by FILTISAC

FILTISAC has undergone a profound transformation over the years, gradually expanding the scope of its activities. Initially focused on natural-fiber bags for cocoa and coffee, the company has diversified its operations. Today, it offers a wide range of modern industrial packaging solutions. This evolution has also been accompanied by a gradual expansion into several countries across the sub-region.

FILTISAC is one of the leading players in the packaging industry in Francophone West Africa. Established in 1965 as part of the development of Côte d’Ivoire’s exports, the company is owned by the IPS/AKFED Group, based in Nairobi, Kenya, and affiliated with the Aga Khan Development Network. The group operates in more than a dozen African countries, particularly in West, East and Central Africa. Listed on the BRVM and employing approximately 4,400 people, FILTISAC is headquartered in Abidjan. It plays a strategic role in the cocoa, coffee and cashew value chains.

“For FILTISAC to survive and remain operational, it had to adapt to changing times and technological developments while taking environmental considerations into account. We are therefore dealing with a company that has integrated itself into the value chains and agricultural and export clusters, remaining an important and indispensable link in export productivity. Through its ability to reinvent itself, FILTISAC has established itself as a listed company with a competitive position in the markets, and it is this value that has enabled it to withstand the test of time.”

Over the decades, FILTISAC has significantly diversified its activities. It is no longer limited to natural-fiber bags for cocoa and coffee, but also produces polypropylene packaging, big bags, as well as plastic containers such as PET preforms and bottles. This move upmarket has been accompanied by the gradual industrialization of its production lines, making the company an integrated player in the packaging value chain.

“But when you withstand the test of time, you are not necessarily required to maintain high production rates, simply because there is strong competition from imported bags and packaging from China and other Asian countries. This competition systematically reduces margins due to production costs subsidized by other packaging exporters.”

Economically, FILTISAC remains an important player in the regional financial market. In 2024, the company generated estimated revenue of CFAF 33.5 billion, with net income of CFAF 18.8 billion, reflecting strong performance despite a decline in revenue compared with the previous year. During the first six months of 2025, the company generated revenue of CFAF 13.4 billion. Its market capitalization stands at around CFAF 30–31 billion, confirming its weight on the BRVM.

“FILTISAC has become an indispensable link in the productivity of all agro-food industries and production chains because the company has maintained its key role in exports. Without packaging, you cannot export, and you cannot export without packaging. We are therefore in a context where packaging has become almost indispensable to the production chain and to exports, hence the need to reduce packaging costs in order to remain competitive in terms of both final and overall costs.”

Present in several countries across West and Central Africa through its subsidiaries, FILTISAC plays a central role in regional industrialization. The company also relies on international quality standards (ISO) and strong integration into agricultural supply chains. Driven by strong population growth and accelerating industrialization across Africa, FILTISAC is consolidating its position as a leading packaging company, at the heart of the sub-region’s agricultural, industrial and financial dynamics.
