BUSINESS – ECOWAS REPORT : 83,560 billion CFA francs to boost industry

Transforming local raw materials into high value-added products: this is Togo’s stated ambition through the Adétikopé Industrial Platform (PIA). Located some twenty kilometres north of Lomé, the PIA aims to attract investment, stimulate industrialisation and create jobs, whilst accelerating the diversification of the Togolese economy.

In Adétikopé, some 20 kilometres north of Lomé, Togo is seeking to chart a new course for its economy: processing its raw materials locally to create greater value and more jobs. Officially inaugurated in June 2021, the Adétikopé Industrial Platform, or PIA, covers 400 hectares in its first phase. The project represents an investment of 83,560 billion CFA francs. Its aim is to attract industry, boost exports and make local processing a driving force for economic diversification.

“The Adétikopé Industrial Platform was, so to speak, commissioned by the highest authorities of the Togolese state, and this was formalised or launched by the presidential decree dated 14 May 2021. This decree therefore provides for the creation of the dry port.”

Cotton lies at the heart of the PIA’s industrial strategy, which aims to establish a complete textile supply chain, from raw materials to finished garments. The platform also targets soya, timber and other agricultural sectors. Among the companies involved are Togo Agro-Ressources, Togo Wood Industries and Togo Clothing Company, which plans to invest 20 billion CFA francs, process 56,000 tonnes of cotton per year, generate 23 billion CFA francs in exports and create 2,000 direct jobs.

“These results demonstrate the relevance of the PA model and its real impact on the national economy. This collective success would not have been possible without the commitment and trust of our partners.”

Idiola Sandah, Director-General of the PIA Coordination Authority –  Togo

Another strategic priority of the PIA is to train a local workforce suited to industrial needs. Its training centre aims to train 7,000 workers for the textile and spinning sectors and 25,000 for the garment sector, with the aim of facilitating the integration of young Togolese people into these new trades. The platform aims to generate 35,000 direct and indirect jobs.

“We will continue to expand our industrial infrastructure. We will further strengthen local value chains. We will attract new investment in strategic sectors. We will further develop the skills of Togolese young people. We will promote the transfer of technology and know-how.”

Behind the figures, then, lies an entire economic model that Togo is seeking to develop. The PIA has a fleet of containers, logistics infrastructure, storage facilities, roads, administrative services and equipment designed to facilitate the establishment of manufacturing businesses.
