Cameroon : Government Reassures Public Amid Post-Election Tensions

The day after the results of the presidential election of October 12, 2025, were announced, the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji, held a press conference this Tuesday, October 28, 2025, in Yaoundé. He notably condemned the post-election demonstrations, deploring the loss of life and calling for vigilance and respect for the institutions of the Republic.

Paul Atanga Nji, Cameroon’s Minister of Territorial Administration, addressed the national and international press on October 28, 2025, in a context marked by post-election tensions observed in certain localities of Cameroon, mainly in the East, West, and coastal regions of the country, resulting in several casualties and enormous material losses. Minister Atanga Nji spoke about most of these incidents, including the destruction of public buildings, the looting of businesses, and the destruction of vehicles belonging to law enforcement forces that occurred in different parts of the country during unauthorized demonstrations. According to the minister, the Cameroonian State remains determined to guarantee the security of people and property throughout the national territory, while urging the population to move on from the presidential elections.

“The process relating to the election of the President of the Republic on October 12, 2025, concluded yesterday, October 27, 2025, with the proclamation of the results by the Constitutional Council, the only body authorized to do so. As you know, the President of the Republic, His Excellency Mr. Paul Biya, candidate of the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM), was declared the winner of this election with 53.66% of the valid votes cast.”

According to the minister, all those arrested in connection with these demonstrations will be held accountable for their actions, reiterating that such acts are firmly condemned by the government.

“No breach of public order will be tolerated, and those apprehended in the ongoing law enforcement operations, as well as those pulling the strings behind the scenes, will be brought before the courts.”

Paul Atanga Nji reassured citizens regarding the measures taken by the government to maintain peace and security throughout the territory. He also reiterated his call to Cameroonians to go about their daily lives normally and to remain agents of peace.
