September 29, 2026, marks a major turning point in Morocco’s political history. Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri was received at the Royal Palace in Rabat by King Mohammed VI; she was appointed Head of Government and tasked with forming the new administration. Fatima El Mansouri thus becomes the first woman to hold this position since the Kingdom’s independence was proclaimed in 1956. This appointment comes in the wake of the legislative elections held on September 23, 2026, during which she served as coordinator of the collective leadership of the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), the party that won the election.
« I was received today at the Royal Palace by His Majesty the King, may God glorify Him,and it was on this occasion that His Majesty honored me with the trust of appointing me Head of Government. This is a historic moment for our country; it is the first time a woman has been appointed to lead the government, and this clearly demonstrates His Majesty’s enduring commitment to encouraging women in our country, and to recognizing their skills, capabilities, and the potential they represent. »

At 50, Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri is no newcomer to politics. A lawyer by training, she served as Mayor of Marrakech before becoming Minister of National Land Use Planning, Urban Planning, and Housing. A prominent figure in the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), her appointment to lead the government is the result of a political career built across multiple arenas.
“ This audience also provided an opportunity for His Majesty to share with me the direction and ambitions for the period ahead. Starting today, we will work through internal party consultations and discussions with all political parties to present, as soon as possible, a proposal for a government that is both effective and competent one capable of meeting the expectations, requirements, and challenges we must address during the upcoming term.‘’

However, the symbolism must quickly give way to action. With 97 MPs, the PAM does not hold a parliamentary majority on its own; the new Head of Government will therefore need to negotiate alliances to form her team and secure Parliament’s support. Key priorities include employment, purchasing power, investment, and infrastructure. A new chapter is thus opening for Morocco, with a woman now at the helm of the executive branch.
