Portrait –  Morocco : Moulay El Hassan at the Heart of the Military

At 23 years old, Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan is emerging as the new face of the Moroccan monarchy. Between diplomatic training, media exposure, and increasing military responsibilities, the son of King Mohammed VI already embodies the future of the kingdom. Step by step, the royal palace is preparing the individual who may one day ensure the continuity of power in Morocco.

At just 23 years old, Moulay El Hassan is gradually establishing himself as the face of a new generation within the Moroccan monarchy. The son of King Mohammed VI has, for several years now, been increasingly present at official events, from national ceremonies to major international diplomatic gatherings. This growing visibility reflects the palace’s intention to prepare public opinion for a future monarchical transition in a kingdom where institutional stability remains a key issue.

“ Moulay El Hassan is gradually embodying the institutional continuity of the Moroccan monarchy. We see his presence at national and international ceremonies. This helps familiarize public opinion in Morocco and abroad. His young, modern and institutional profile could also allow Morocco to strengthen its image as a stable regional power, capable of engaging with Africa, Europe and the Arab world.”

Born on 8th May 2003 in Rabat, the young prince follows a carefully structured path. After his education at the Royal College, he continued his studies at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University, where he specializes in governance, international relations and geostrategy. Multilingual, he speaks Arabic, French, English and Spanish. This modern academic background aligns with Morocco’s diplomatic ambitions, as the country has become in recent years an influential actor in Africa, the Middle East, and among Western partners.

“I believe that Moulay El Hassan could play a major future role in Morocco’s diplomatic and strategic sphere. Today, Morocco’s diplomacy is oriented toward Africa. I think Moulay El Hassan could contribute to strengthening the kingdom’s economic, security and political partnerships. This integration prepares the Crown Prince to eventually assume the role of Supreme Commander and Chief of General Staff.”

On May 2nd 2026, Prince Moulay El Hassan reached a new milestone with his appointment as coordinator of the central structures of the Royal Armed Forces within the General Staff. This is a highly symbolic position, previously held by his father in 1985 under the reign of Hassan II, before his accession to the throne. This appointment comes as Morocco accelerates the modernization of its military apparatus, which counts approximately 700,000 members. According to the 2026 Global Firepower ranking, the kingdom now holds 6th place in Africa and 56th worldwide, with a power index of 1.0368, confirming its strategic role in the Sahel and North Africa.

“The decision to appoint Prince Moulay El Hassan as central coordinator of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces is part of a tradition where his grandfather, King Hassan II, had appointed his father to the same position, in order to allow the future king to understand from within the instrument of his authority, the army. It is a country that must have an army capable of responding to security challenges that may arise along this major maritime route south of NATO and north of the Sahel.”

Discreet yet highly present in the media, Moulay El Hassan cultivates a modern, disciplined image that is close to Moroccan youth. In a context marked by regional tensions, economic challenges, and African geopolitical shifts, the Crown Prince now appears as one of the main symbols of continuity, stability, and Morocco’s strategic future.
