Postal Card – Morocco : Tangier Med, 11 million containers in 2025

Located in northern Morocco, at the crossroads of the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, Tangier is now established as a strategic city with international influence. Thanks to its exceptional geographic location and the presence of the Tanger Med port complex, the region has become a true driver of economic growth for the country. In 2025, its record logistics performance and industrial dynamism strengthen its central role in global trade and in Morocco’s development.

Tangier in Morocco is a strategic city in North Africa located in the northern part of the country, facing Spain, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. This position makes it an important commercial crossroads. With a population exceeding 1.27 million inhabitants, the city is experiencing strong growth thanks to industrial and port development.

“Morocco is a key actor in the development of maritime laws and regulations adopted by the International Maritime Organization, thanks to its expertise rooted in a historical legacy linked to maritime engagement. Moreover, the Tangier Med port, here in Tangier, is the largest and most active port in the Mediterranean.”

Abdessamad Kayouh, Minister of Transport – Morocco

Long known for its commercial and tourism role, Tangier has now become a major industrial hub. The automotive industry plays a central role there, with an annual turnover of around 125 billion dirhams and production of more than 700,000 vehicles per year. In addition, the textile, aerospace, and logistics sectors also contribute to its economy.

“How can we bring together all stakeholders in order to develop tourism that is sustainable and inclusive at the destination level? And also, let us not forget that we have highlighted gastronomy and sport following the achievement of the national team.”

AMHARECH LAILA, Professor of MarketingMorocco

The true economic heart of the region is the Tanger Med port complex, considered the largest port in Africa and the Mediterranean. In 2025, Tanger Med confirms its role as a global maritime trade hub with record results: around 11 million containers handled and nearly 161 million tons of goods. The port also facilitated the passage of nearly 900,000 vehicles, both imported and exported.

“The international road transport segment processed more than 535,000 trucks, representing a 3.6% increase compared to 2024. This growth is mainly driven by the dynamism of industrial and agri-food exports, which increased by 4.8% and 4.3% respectively.”

Jaafar Amiar, Director, Tanger-Med PortMorocco

With an area of approximately 124 km², Tangier is an important economic center. The Tanger Med port holds a major strategic position and stands as a key infrastructure on major international shipping routes.
