Morocco Africa – Postal Card : Discovering Dakhla

In southern Morocco, where the desert meets the Atlantic Ocean, Dakhla is attracting growing attention. Known for its lagoon and fishing activities, the city is now undergoing a profound transformation. Tourism, agriculture, renewable energy and major infrastructure projects are gradually diversifying its economy. With a regional GDP of 18.7 billion dirhams in 2023, up 19.5% in one year, Dakhla is reinforcing its ambition to become a new economic hub for Morocco and a gateway to Africa.

Between the Sahara dunes and the Atlantic Ocean, Dakhla is emerging as one of the new economic hubs of southern Morocco. The Dakhla-Oued Eddahab region had a population of 219,965 in 2024, according to the High Commission for Planning (HCP), compared with around 143,000 in 2014. The city benefits from an exceptional natural environment. Its famous lagoon, beaches, dunes and steady winds have made it a sought-after destination for water sports enthusiasts, particularly kitesurfing and windsurfing.

“After my international career, I wanted to return to Dakhla and invest in a kitesurfing school. It is my way of giving back to the city that gave me so much. … Young people here have enormous potential, and water sports can truly change their future.”

Beyond its image as a tourist destination, Dakhla is developing a diversified economy. Its regional GDP reached 18.7 billion dirhams in 2023 (around USD 2 billion), up 19.5% year-on-year. The region thus accounts for around 1.3% of Morocco’s national GDP.

“Since the recovery of the Saharan territories, the city of Dakhla has experienced sustained development across several sectors, particularly tourism. As an entrepreneur, I can say that significant efforts have been made to encourage investment.”

Othman Aamar, President of the Dakhla Tourism Council – Morocco

Fishing remains the main driver of the economy. With around 2.54 billion dirhams in 2023, the sector grew by 38.1% and accounted for nearly 34% of the national value of the fishing industry. Agriculture is also expanding rapidly: its value increased by 84.8% in 2023, reaching nearly 696 million dirhams.

“Fishing is both a means of livelihood, a leisure activity and a sport. In the Wadadi area of El Dahab, recreational angling attracts people of all ages seeking relaxation and a connection with nature.”

Mustapha Bakhala, Recreational Angler – Morocco

These activities are complemented by the region’s solar and wind potential, as well as the Dakhla Atlantic Port project, one of the region’s major infrastructure projects. Located around 40 kilometers north of the city, this port complex represents an investment of approximately 12.65 billion dirhams. It is intended to strengthen trade, support fishing activities, and develop maritime transport and logistics.
