Senegal – GTA Phase 1 : 20-25% LNG for Domestic Market

Presidents Bassirou Diomaye Faye of Senegal and Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani of Mauritania visited the Grand Tortue Arméyim (GTA) hub on May 22, 2025. The visit celebrates two historic milestones recently achieved: the start of gas production in January 2025 and the first export of liquefied natural gas in April 2025, officially integrating the two nations into the select circle of LNG exporting countries. According to President Diomaye Faye, by 2027, 20-25% of the liquefied natural gas produced in phase 1 of the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) offshore gas project could be directed to the domestic market, resulting in a permanent reduction in energy prices.

On 22 May 2025, the President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, and the President of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, visited the Grand Tortue Arméyim hub (GTA). The natural gas liquefaction plant began producing liquefied natural gas on 9 February 2025, with an annual production capacity of 2.3 million tonnes. The visit also celebrated the first LNG export in April 2025, officially integrating the two nations into the select group of LNG-exporting countries.

This achievement is more than just a technical or economic feat. It embodies the depth of the historical ties of fraternity, friendship and good neighborliness between Senegal and Mauritania, two countries united by history, geography and a common future. The GTA project, planted in ultra-deep waters on our borders, is a shining example of how two African nations can achieve their goals by joining forces, pooling expertise and pursuing a shared ambition.

By 2027, according to President Diomaye Faye, 20 to 25% of the liquefied natural gas produced in phase 1 of the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) offshore gas project could be directed towards the domestic market, leading to a permanent reduction in energy prices.

« Here, in the heart of the GTA final year, a new hour dawns for Senegal, Mauritania and the whole of West Africa. This project is first and foremost the story of a shared ambition, forged in the desire to control our energy, economic and sovereign destiny, by exploiting our resources. We have chosen not to remain on the periphery of progress, but to be major players ».

Bassirou Diomaye Faye, President of the Republic  Senegal

The GTA project, located on the maritime border between Senegal and Mauritania, is one of the largest natural gas development projects in West Africa. According to Bassirou Diomaye Faye, this project paves the way for emerging projects such as the Yakaar-Teranga project.
