President Paul Biya has signed a decree extending the term of municipal councillors elected in 2020 by 11 months, keeping them in office until February 28, 2027. The decision comes amid a reshaping of the electoral calendar, following amendments to the Electoral Code adopted in April, which allow the head of state to extend the mandate of local elected officials.
